Beyond the IEP –> How School Tools Address Some (But Not All) Supports Needed for Life After High School
The IEP (or many 504 plans) is a misunderstood tool during a young person’s time in public school. Parents often are unsure how to translate some of the “education-speak” into actionable strategies for use outside the classroom. As our children “age out” of school-based services, the last couple of IEPs are supposed to contain guidance for transitions. Some IEP meetings held in the last couple of years of high school are extremely valuable for families; many are not.
We’ve invited Lori Tryon, a veteran school administrator, special education leader, and current advisor to many families to come speak to parents during our February Thrive group, guest speaker session. Lori is helping us develop some tools that we will be sharing in the months to come that lead to better transitions. If the transition event is in your rear-view mirror, the information we present and the tools we’re developing will still be very valuable to you and your grown child.
